Company History and Proprietors

Boxall and Edmiston’s company history centres round its founders and their shared passion for the production of true British shotguns, together with the tradition, and the continuity of this unique combination of both art and craft.

Peter Boxall, a fine shot, formerly of Jaguar Cars, W&C Scott, and Holland & Holland where he was the manufacturing director, and James Edmiston, former MD of the Sterling Armament Company, pooled their varied experiences in the successful firearms world. They also accepted counsel from friends of many years in the British Gun Trade and set about producing an entirely British made side-by-side shotgun; the first for many decades. The company produces a boxlock, a boxlock with sideplates, and a full back action sidelock.

To make top quality guns, it is not sufficient to acquire state-of-the-art computerised machine-tools that work to the tolerances of microns, but it certainly helps. B&E has set out to make these absolutely top quality shotguns by innovation and by the more efficient utilisation of skills of those specialists so necessary to ensure that the British continue to make the finest guns in the world.

Purposely, the company has not resurrected the historical remnants of some bygone gunmaker, but has felt sufficiently confident in its own abilities to produce a unique superlative article for British sportsmen and sportswomen that doubles as a rock solid investment for all time. The finest in British engineering, traditional gunmaking skills, and simple good taste, are part of the same proud package.

Further, B&E offers full assistance to fellow members of the Gun Trade to benefit from its extensive research and development in various production techniques. It regards the resurgence of a strong united British gun industry as being to the benefit of all.

Latterly, a well-known gun journalist suggested that the company make an English over-and-under game gun. A great deal of thought went into the design in order to optimise not only the weight and balance factors, but also those of appearance and endurance. Internally, the sleek round action and the classic side-plated action are the same. A sidelock version was considered, but unlike a side-by-side, the layout of the triggers and hammers in an over-and-under are such that a sidelock offers no improvement in lock-time and so would be superfluous. The over-and-under game gun market has been particularly buoyant. Any performance enhancement and methods of manufacture are constantly reviewed. The investment factor of a B&E gun continues to soar.
